Is Your Email Inbox Really Full?

BBB warns of a new way thieves are trying to get your personal information. Cincinnati consumers are receiving an email stating, “Your mailbox has exceeded the storage limit. . . you may not be able to send or receive new emails until you re-evaluate your mailbox. To re-evaluate your mailbox please enter your username and password in the column given below.”

Incidentally, the email also asks for your birth date, which clearly has nothing to do with your email storage limit and everything to do with possible identity theft.

Before clicking anything in the email message, keep in mind, many people have only one set of usernames and passwords so if you send that information to the thieves they could get into your accounts. Plus, most email inboxes have oodles of storage space, so you would have to work pretty hard at trying to fill it up or even come close to it. What can you do to stay safe?

  • Do not provide any personal information in an email from someone you do not know

  • Do not click on links in emails offering a link to repair your computer, install software or connect to another document.

  • Never give your credit card number, social security number or bank account information to pay for fees, taxes, or shipping costs for anything that you may have ‘won’, receive for ‘free’ or to pay for a service the sender is offering.

Bottom line, if you receive an email stating your email box is full or nearing capacity, don’t click it – delete it.
