Today is Facebook’s 10th birthday, and the social media giant has more than a billion reasons to celebrate. That’s because the company boasts over a billion users, many of whom have been a part of Facebook’s digital network for multiple years. In an open letter celebrating this great occasion, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg reflects on the history of the company as well as the role he thinks Facebook and social media will play in the future:
“People often ask if I always knew that Facebook would become what it is today. No way.”
“Today, only one-third of the world’s population has access to the internet. In the next decade, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to connect the other two-thirds.”
“Today, social networks are mostly about sharing moments. In the next decade, they’ll also help you answer questions and solve complex problems.”

To celebrate the occasion and fuel some global Facebook reminiscing, the website has released a tool that lets you take “A Look Back” at your time on Facebook. It compiles a slideshow of photos and videos from your profile and pairs them with uplifting music.
Ten years ago, Facebook began to take the digital world by storm and forever redefined the way people all over the world connect with each other. This past decade has been transformed by the power of social media. As Zuckerburg mentions in his letter, it will be interesting to see what the next decade of social media has in store.
