The season is upon us, and while some enjoy the whirlwind cacophony of the mall in December, or even brave the chaos of Black Friday sales, many of us prefer to do our Christmas shopping online. Done correctly, purchasing the perfect presents from the comfort of your own home can save you time and money as well as your own sanity!

Top 8 Tips for Christmas Shopping Online

8. Start Early

UPS, FedEx, and the US Postal Service experience massive increases in business in December. If you don’t ship well in advance, you may pay exorbitant fees.

Another consideration is limited quantities. Some of the best deals may be on small lots or popular items. If you know what you want, buy when you have the chance. In addition, if you’re purchasing handmade or custom goods, this work takes time. Respect the artist and order early!

Plus, many vendors, including Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Amazon, and offer great Cyber Monday deals.

7. Comparison Shop

It only takes a minute to search multiple stores online at or other sites. Why wouldn’t you take that time to get the best deal? Even if Amazon is your go-to site for everything, you may find the original retailer has some special offers.

If you visit brick and mortar stores, it’s a good idea to compare prices there, too. It’s understandable if you don’t want to brave the crowds, or it you’re willing to pay more money to avoid the mall, but sometimes the digital deal isn’t the best one.

6. Use Barcode Apps

If you have a smart phone, is it pulling its weight in your quest to find the perfect gift? Download a barcode app for the iPhone or the Android and use it to find the best deals. Barcode scanners aren’t just for retailers! These apps allow you to scan the barcode on any item and then check out reviews and prices so you can comparison shop on your phone.

5. Search for Digital Coupons

If you haven’t got a coupon code, find one! Sites like RetailMeNot,, CouponSherpa, and aggregate all kinds of money-saving coupon codes in one place. Just look up the your favorite brands and see what’s available before you start shopping.

Or, if you fall in love with an item, you can search “coupon code” and the name of the company online to determine whether or not there are any special deals to grab.
