With Halloween just around the corner, now is the time to remind you about the dangers of decorative contact lenses. The Optical Dispensers Board says the number of consumer complaints filed against the illegal sale of such lenses have shown a steady increase after a period of decline.
The Ohio Attorney General says over-the-counter sales of decorative contact lenses are illegal and there have been 15 cease and desist ordered issued so far this year.
Attorney General Mike DeWine says, “If such medical devices are not administered properly they can cause serious eye infections that can lead to permanent damage including blindness.”
Remember, it’s illegal for businesses to sell cosmetic contact lenses, even those that provide no visual correction, without requiring a prescription from an eye doctor.
If you use makeup to go trick-or-treating always use water-soluble cosmetics and do not apply skin creams or moisturizers too close to the eyes.
