A new school year is just around the corner and parents will be required to fill out forms. Many of these forms contain personal information which in the wrong hands can be used to commit fraud. Loans can be taken out, credit cards can be opened and because they are children these crimes can go years without being discovered.
BBB suggests following these steps when filling out any documents with your child’s personal information
Find out who will have access to your child’s information & if these documents will be kept in a secure location.
When forms are sent home asking for personal information find out how it will be used and if it will be shared with anyone else.
Read the notice explaining your rights under FERPA that schools must send out.
If your child’s school does experience a data breach take action as soon as possible. Talk with the staff at the school about the incident and what the school’s practices is in cases like this. If need be write a letter the school administrator, or board.
