Local Insurance Identity Scam

BBB recently received information regarding a possible identity theft insurance scam in our area. The way the scam operates is that the customer receives a telephone call from someone claiming to be representing the customer’s insurance company.   The pitch is that the insurance company is being sold to another company and the customer’s information has been lost in their system.  The representative asks to come out to the customer’s home to recover the personal information that was lost.

The caller had the customer’s name, address and phone number, information that is not hard for anyone to obtain, and needed to collect  additional information such as social security numbers and perhaps banking information. BBB contacted the insurance company and verified that the business was not being sold and they were still in possession of the customer’s information.

If you receive a call like this, BBB suggests that you hang up, do not provide any information to the caller,  contact your insurance company , the BBB and your local police department.
