Backpacks, Paper, Pencils, Back to School OH MY!

With summer vacation quickly coming to an end and a new school year on the horizon, your checkbook may be feeling a financial pinch.

According to National Retail Federation estimates, the average cost of sending your child to school with all of the needed supplies for the school year is $634.78. This can be quite a strain on a family budget. BBB has some tips that may help alleviate some of the financial burden.

  • Check the newspaper or go online for local back to school festivals where you can get some school supplies at no charge.

  • Make a list and stick to it.  Your child may want an item, but not necessarily need it.

  • Buy general supplies in bulk, paper, pencils etc. These can be used throughout the year or even next year.

  • Compare prices between discount and department stores for the best buys and shop early.

  • Reuse and Recycle — it saves money to reuse rulers, pencil sharpeners & scissors from the previous year.

  • Check out store flyers for specials, utilize coupons and rebates.

Be sure to read ads, coupons, and rebate information carefully to know the terms and conditions. This will help avoid any confusion in the checkout line and ensure that you’re getting the best quality and quantity for your money.

With a little homework, your child will be back to school with everything needed without breaking the family bank. Be sure to check BBB for great tips, information and the latest scams for the upcoming school year.
