Unfortunately, temperatures have dropped again and for many Ohio families that means turning up their furnaces. By doing so, the increase in utility bills can be worrisome. As a result, BBB receives calls from consumers who are facing disconnection of their utilities because they can’t keep current on their accounts.
The Office of the Ohio Consumers’ Counsel (OCC) reports that there are programs in place to assist Ohio residents with this issue. One such program is the Winter Reconnect Order issued by Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) in September. This Winter Reconnect Order provides electric and natural gas utility customers the opportunity to avoid a disconnection or have their services restored by making a one-time payment of $175. Customers using the Winter Reconnect Order must then enter into a payment arrangement with their utility company for any remaining balances. The Order went into effect October 15th and extends until April 15th 2013. Find out additional details of the Winter Reconnect Order.
The OCC offers additional information about assistance programs available to help consumers stay connected to their utility services.
