Reports Suggest That Microsoft May Be Building Its Own Smartphone

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is currently working on a new phone with Asian component suppliers.

Mashable explains that Microsoft’s work on a new phone would make sense given that they have just released Surface, a Microsoft designed and proon phone large 150x150 Reports Suggest That Microsoft May Be Building Its Own Smartphoneduced tablet.  Microsoft’s introduction of the Surface reportedly was met with some resistance from their hardware partners, who even came out publicly to voice their displeasure with Microsoft’s new tablet.  A foray into the phone market would mean that Microsoft would become a direct competitor to both HTC and Nokia, both of which have manufactured hardware specifically for Windows phones.

The Wall Street Journal report indicates that Microsoft is testing a phone with a 4 to 5 inch screen.  The source that the Journal had for this story says that Microsoft may just be testing a model and not planning to produce a new phone anytime soon.
