Consumers nationwide are receiving letters stating that they have won two round-trip tickets courtesy of American Airlines or US Airlines. Don’t be fooled! US Airlines is not a real company, this letter is not from the real American Airlines, and sadly you have not actually won any tickets. These letters are, in fact, scams.
Consumers are receiving either a fax or a hand addressed letter in the mail. The letters have no return address and use a signature stamp as opposed to a meter mark. Most of the letters appear to be coming from Phoenix, Arizona and contain a logo of either US Airlines or American Airlines. The message typically reads as follows:
NOTE: You must respond no later than XXXX.
Dear XXXX,
I am pleased to inform you that you have qualified for an award of 2 roundtrip airline tickets. Congratulations. These tickets are valid for travel anywhere in the Continental U.S. from any major international airport. The retail value of this award is up to $1,298.00. Certain restrictions apply. We have attempted contacting you several times without success. This is our last attempt. If we do not hear from you soon, we may need to issue the ticket vouchers to the alternate.
Please call me today at 1-866-546-1767.
Regards,
XXXX
Vice President
Although these letters may look legitimate, they are not. The phony name “US Airlines” is supposed to resemble the real “United Airlines.” With many consumers reporting these letters, scammers have since switched to using the name “American Airlines.” The letters are NOT, however, from the real American Airlines. This is a phishing scam attempting to acquire your personal information.

I actually feel sorry for people who may not realize there is no such thing as US Airlines. I’m also a retire of a “real” airline who has a lifetime of free flights, so they r dumber than dumb to have sent me that ridiculous letter. What morans! Anyway, has anyone tried the 866 number on the letter? Just curious, I’m afraid to try it because it could be scamming us $20 bucks a minute or something like that.

Here’s the newest information I received today (Feb 23, 2013). From American Airways, Dated February 19th, 2013 (who writes the date as the “19th” on a letter???); Telephone call back number is 1-866-727-4544, and, is signed by “‘Ali Hale’, Vice President”.
Why dosen’t the USPS prosecute them for mail fraud???

I received mine today (March 1,2013) which is dated Feb 25th,2013. Phone # to call is 1-866-318-0581& signed by Ali Hale.
I immediately suspected its authenticity because the paper is of low grade & light, totally unlike the heavy weight paper a big company would use. Also the letter appears to be printed on an ink tone printer, not a laser jet printer (cheap scammer!!)
One more thing: the letter is actually addressed to my sister who lives overseas. She only uses my address for her Bank of America account annual tax letter. Who had sold her information?

On Friday, November 02, 2012 at approximately 2055 hours, I contacted US Airline via the telephone (866-753-8004) I talked to a lady on the phone. I gave her a fake name and letter number. She stated to me that the name didn’t match with the number. I stated to her that I didn’t have the paper in front of me and just wrote it down. She asked me for my zip code, and I gave her a zip code. She couldn’t find the name located in that zip code area. Instead, she treated me like I was a winner started to give me all kinds of information.
Well, I wasn’t interested in what she had to say, about the deals. I was questioning her about what travel agency they were going to refer me to (the area the zip code I gave them). She stated Vacationdeal.com or vacationdeals.com I asked her who are they are associated with in my area. She stated with a travel agency in TriState Park. She started to get worried on the phone. I stated to her that I gave her a fake name and number and wanted to talk to her supervisor about this fraud!!! She didn’t want me to talk to her supervisor and she stated to me she is going to end the call. She hangs the phone on me.
I gave her a fake name and number and I WAS STILL I WAS A WINNER!!!!!!!
Beware of this fraud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The guy finally gave me the name of the company after I asked 3 times. Vacation and Deals.com. We made an appointment for a 90 minutes, max. presentation on Sunday. If we call the number he gave me to confirm our appointment we’ll get another nice gift. Cool! – Yeah Right! Probably some timeshare presentation. I am surprised that they allow those in Oregon now. When I lived in Oregon we had to travel to Vancouver WA for these timeshare presentations.
If I have nothing else to do, I might attend just to see what it is about and then report them to the authorities. Or, if I find something better to do on Sunday we won’t go.

I also received one on 10/4/12 in Iowa from Margaret Fultz. The phone number is 1-866-937-7124. I think they get our information from cell phone providers. I am on the do not call list but I get phone calls from 1-866 numbers all of the time on my cell. Sometimes it says they are a security company. I once filed a complaint to my attorney general and nothing ever came of it. However they get our info should be illegal and I am really sick of it. And it makes me wonder what other information of mine they have.

Mine arrived in the Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex (yes that’s a word…here) on Oct, 5, 2012. It came as an “Official Document” in one of those tear off the end and top edges jobs that makes it look like and IRS notice. No name on this one, just “Awards Department” with the phone number (866) 937-0954. Mailed out of Oklahoma City!

I have been getting emails from these people for about 5 or 6 weeks, I have always deleted them, but there was always that doubt in the back of my mind. I mail off quite a few sweepstakes entry forms from legitimate vendors, but I’ve never won anything but a free appointment to give me a personalized quote. Anyway, these emails all had the same “respond by” date on them, and when the professional looking “tear off the edges and unfold” letter arrived my small doubt became a did I actually win moment. I wonder if they did read the comments on this site, because their mailed material did get better indeed. I have flown quite a bit in the past few years, and if it had been from one of those airlines, I think I would have called. They are getting better, thank goodness for this, and related sites.

Received a strange letter in the mail today 10/9/12 and I live in Oregon.
It was date Oct 6 and claimed to be awarding 2 round trip airline tickets.
Hand written address on the envelope, post marked from Phoenix, AZ.
Fake “US Airlines” on the letter head. Hand signed by “Margaret Fultz.”
1-866-754-0979. Tracking code at the bottom of the letter: NK-77567
This is clearly a scam, but who takes the time to hand write these envelopes (??) and further implicate themselves when they are caught (??) DUMB!!!
PS: How did they get my name and address?!?
They probably just randomly grabbed your address at random. By the way, what appears to be handwritten is actually printed by a printer. If you examine them carefully you can see that there is no imprint in the paper from the pressure of a pen, nor does it show through the paper the right way when looking at the backside.
I still think it is hand written, with a gel-ink pen perhaps, despite no impression on the other side. Otherwise, this is an incredibly elaborate scam to be using a computer program that imitates feminine handwriting. I don’t know of a font that could replicate that! Ironic that someone would try that hard to look real, but have a cheesy plain letterhead and no return address on the envelope.
They may have been writing the hand written parts on a computer with a stylus. I don’t think it is a font as the lines are not straight, and the same numbers and characters that repeat are not the same.
They may have also been writing on a very hard surface so there would be little to no indentation on the paper. If they also have a light touch and a gel type pen would explain the lack of impression on the paper. The signature has ink blots and very light sections that a computer would have difficulty printing or scanning. Also they probably used a paper folding machine to fold and stuff the envelopes so that could have flattened the writing out… Along with going through the US postal service sorting machines who knows how many times.

I’ll also answer the question many have asked about how names and addresses of actual people are being obtained. You can legally rent information databases based on criteria you specify through several companies. I’ve rented databases for legit marketing efforts in the past. The more specific your target audience and information you want to receive, the higher the rental cost. Most likely, that’s how these people have gotten ahold of your information. I wouldn’t stress over it too much.

Many people that post on these forums are people that haven’t even attended the presentation. You have one person that posts, “its a scam,” and everyone else chimes in before ever coming down to the presentation. I assure you by the end of the presentation, you will walk away with two roundtrip airline vouchers for attending and listening to what we have to offer. A lot of people send in this letter to the BBB without ever attending the presentation. We have been in business for many years and I assure you, we wouldn’t have gotten this far if this were a scam. I hope to see you there.

Denise

I too received this same type of letter (I’m a travel consultant, so I spotted this scam a mile away), my first clue was the fake US Airlines logo, the fact that there is no return address, and this so called “Jaqueline Simms” is the Vice President… that’s a laugh. What Vice President hand writes their own envelope, “very sloppily I must say”.
She claims we are qualified for 2 airlines tickes valued up to $1298.00, and she threatens in the letter, that she has been trying to reach us repeatedly, if we don’t call immediately, then we will have to forfeit this prize and it will be given to someone else.
This is too sad, that there are so many of this criminal minded people that put so much effort into scamming others. I tell you, if they used all of this effort and energy towards something good, they might actually be successful, contributing individuals in this country!

I have to say more… after reading some of the comments, some folks are calling them and even setting up appointments at this “so called” showroom tour. I don’t think anyone should take any steps towards this scam, even if you just want to “check it out for yourself”. Remember, these criminals have ways of getting personal information from you one way or another. If you even plan on going to this “event” to see what’s up, you have to be very careful… just think… what’s stopping them from robbing your house while you are at this so called “90 minute presentation”? The best thing to do, is report it with BBB like we are, and send copies of the letter or even the original to your Attorney General. If you get involved with these hyenas in any way, you just might get bitten.

I received the same scam letter today, 3 Nov 2012, from Monica Hunt, supposedly Vice President. The envelope was addressed by hand from Phoenix AZ and had no return address. Deadline November 7th, 2012. Phone number listed is 1-866-753-0075. It looked like a scam from the instant I looked at the envelope.
Did a search on Monica Hunt American Airways and was immediately directed to this thread. Did a search on the phone number and it took me to the places where they’ll do the search for a fee.
Hope authorities catch her/him/whoever and they win a lengthy jail term.

Just got the letter and live in Nashville TN. I called and was told I had to bring my husband, no children were allowed and we were required to bring photo ID’s and a major credit card. Additional requirements were that the household income had to be above 50,000 per year and if we did not have a major credit card we would not be able to attend.

Got the same letter signed by Vice President Jamie Cape. Phone number to call is 866-752-8964. I’m in the Boston area. Received a subsequent email from denisedavis@vacationanddeals.com. Suspecting scam (before checking online and confirming my suspicions) I asked in what form would the airline tickets be provided. Following is a copy and paste of their response: “It is a voucher that can be used with Delta, Southwest, JetBlue, or American Airlines. When you leave the presentation, you will have the vouchers and information to set up your trip. Your flight will be serviced to and from a major international airport in the continental United States.” [End of quote/response]
Not sure who is a bigger scam…these guys or Obama!

Well received mine today………..
Company Name: US Airlines
Vice President: Jamie Cape
Phone Number: 1-866-949-7216
Letter Dated: November 5, 2012
Respond by no later than: November 9, 2012
Also indicates that they have been attempting to contact me without success…..lol
yeah right.
Some additional information:
Letter is from Phoenix, AZ 852 according to the postage stamp… but that stamping even appears to be odd.
The big alarms with the letter
1. is the absence of a corporate address on the envelope.
2. not as big as the first one above but most official corporate letter head is in color.
3. a stamp on any corporate letter instantly sends me online to look for the scam as most companies use postage-machines.
Stupid that you thought you were going to get me with this crap. Try going back to the third grade because you are definitely not smarter than a fifth grader. Anyone that gets had by this email should do the same.

Oh and one more thing the destination address is hand written.

I got one of these letters in the mail today. from “US Airlines” and a phone number 1-866-949-7216 and signed Vice President , Jamie Cape. I was going to report it to the BBB but apparently that isnt possible without a physical address. I’m actually a 20 yr airline employee and as soon as I saw “US Airlines” i knew it was a scam letter, I just feel bad for people who actually dont know better and fall for this stuff. Hopefully someone can put these ID thieves behind bars where they belong.

Called the number just to see how it works. They claim a new travel agency is starting up and is doing this as a promotion to get the word out. They say you have to go to a travel agency on Century Rd in Blue Bell, PA to pick up the award. Of course you will have to pay any taxes and fees. They check demographic info and then want to set up an appointment. I stopped at this point and came here to check it out. Should have known with all the red flags.
I live in MD and I received a bit different letter from the one described.
Mine was a “check”, like the one you receive for a mail-in rebate and that you have to open by tearing away perforated stubs from the sides.
On the outside it said:
“Travel Check Voucher Enclosed” but no return address.
My name and address was printed and instead of the stamps there was a square with:
PRSRTSTD <- Note the spelling (which I just picked it up myself)
U.S. POSTAGE
PAID
PHOENIX, AZ
PERMIT NO. 1484
and it was not stamped by the USPS.
After opening, the instructions on the upper third of the letter said pretty much what was described already. I had til November 5 to confirm.
Phone number to call: 1-866-753-1061
The check itself has the "Logo" of US Airlines and the phone number was the same as in the body of the letter.
The check was Dated October 22nd 2012 and was for $1,400.00
It was Pay to the order of: US Airlines on behalf of {my name}
Which means they make you believe that "US Airlines" is a real entity.
It was from:
Travel Union
Scottsdale, AZ 85251
It was signed in blue ink by R Lee (hard to tell if it is handwritten or scanned signature and printed)
I did call, just to see what was it about.
They explained that it is from a travel Agency called "Vacations and Deals" (I found their website :http://www.vacationanddeals.com) and that I would have to attend a presentation in Arlington, VA, where they would introduce the service of the agency in exchange for the said travel voucher.
The appointment is in a Holiday inn.
I made an appointment before reading this.
They confirmed that I am still married and that we make more than $50,000 a year (that worries me).
They requested that both I and my wife be present, that we bring a valid driving license AND a credit card (not debit card) as a form of additional ID.
I received a confirmation e-mail and a follow-up confirmation call. When they said "No children" I got suspicious (better late than never). Why was that a requirement if that was not some kind of high pressure sale?
After reading this I am not going.
But I would like to know:
What type of scam is it?
How do they make money off me? By stealing Credit card info and Driving license?
Or by burglarizing my home while we are both away?
Is it, in fact, some type of high pressure sale? (It says this is not a timeshare or land sale).
If someone could enlighten me I would appreciate.
.

In response to LB in Maryland:
I live in PA and received a “check” as well with minor differences….
Amount was for $1298.00 and was signed by Juli Lee. No doubt in my mind – this is a scam!
Could be any of the following LB:
1. Yeah could be a home invasion.
2. They could want to scan your credit card when you arrive you know to verify/validate it. Which then with their look alike scans the card for their later use to purchase whatever they want online. (Don’t allow it. Tell them if your interested then they can later but not until. I have had one of them tell me that they needed to scan it regardless in order to attend. I informed them that if they scan my card without my permission I would call the police. Some of them will back down, some will not. They will claim to be legal. Anyone can book a hotel hall.)
3. Could be a high pressure sale.
4. Could be identity theft.
5. Children distract from their presentation and in most cases the children are smarter than those attempting to scam you, but most people fall prey to these high pressure scams thinking they see such a benefit. A child wants more information than they usually provide or are willing to provide. They hate that they will even claim that it distracts other individuals at these things.
If you ever attend anything, never let them scan anything drivers license, credit cards nothing. Never provide information such as social security numbers, etc…
If you must listen to a presentation, I always listen to every word and question everything that sounds odd or they don’t go over. Therefore I find out about what I am in for online before going to anything. I have gone to a few of these high pressure sales one’s just for fun and questioned them so much that they were not able to hook anyone in my group with there bull before they asked me to leave, because I was blowing large holes in everything they were saying. I had the last laugh… they wasted their time just like they waste ours…with their crap.

Voucher was computer signed by Rachel Lue. Printed on the stub is the note “This is not a timeshare or land sales offer.” The phone number is 866-231-3404. Of course I got the same letter, but I did get a live person. What bothered me was that if you have no sponse they insist that you come alone and no children, no friends etc. What if something happens to me then no one will know where I went. I must ask, has anyone even attended a presentation? I would like to know a real life experience of at least attending. It sounds similar to those presentation events that we’re offered on the streets of Las Vegas and through your timeshares, so the gifts may be real. I must say that I to thought they were offering United Airline tickets. Again has anyone actually attended any of the meetings?

Bottomline, this is certainly a scam even without looking this up on google, but clearly my fellow citizen’s notes are appreciated because you just confirm that what I’m thinking was spot on, “DON’T DO IT, THEY’RE TRYING TO RIP YOU OFF”. Don’t know how, didn’t call the number but I know its a scam and unfortunately they’ll keep looking for some unsuspecting fellow countrymen to take advantage of. I also got the same letter signed by C. Ryan and here’s what I did.
Using *67 on my phone so my number does not come up, I called this number. It was answered by an automated voice stating to hold until a representative came on. I waited for about five minutes and, lo and behold some female voice did in fact come on the line. Now here’s the good part. I have an Xcel soundboard with about 100 different fart sounds on it, one that lasts about 15 seconds that I use whenever I get an unwanted call. So, after I waited and a live voice came on the line, I blasted the 15 second fart sounds until they hung up. I did this four times yesterday, and begin again this morning, so far three times that I’ve managed to get a live voice on the phone. Since I’m retired and have nothing better to do, I’ll just keep on doing this as many times as I can. I’m having a great time!

I received the letter from United Airways today and called the number just for my own entertainment purpose. Yes the reference number on the bottom is tied to your name. When you give it to them they say your name. I spoke real slow just to take up a lot of their time. They ask a few questions and told me I would have to go to Lombard Illinois to pick up my tickets. I can tell already this is going to drag me to a time share condo sales event. One question is do you make more then $45,000 per year. I lied and said no, they said sorry but that is a requirement and then hung up on me. I know it was a scam but hey the letter said I won, and you have a required minimum income to claim the prize?

Just wanted to add that I’m near Orlando, Florida and I got one of these letters from “United Airlines”. So it appears they are branching out a bit. Still postmarked in Phoenix. I think United Airlines can afford colored ink in their letterheads… Idk, maybe I’m thinking to highly of an airline company.

Sorry, “American Airways”. Not Airlines as previously stated.

Needless to say they asked me for my credit card number said they would give me a reference number for my cruise. I told the lady I would like to see the info first before giving any of my info. She got kind of rude told me that this wasn’t a scam. I told get there was no way I was giving her anything without some type of proof of a business. Of course you get the how date you think we are not legit . So I told her I was support and hung up……I called federal crime line. They have me a on line site for postal fraud, which is a form you can fill out. Will that want enough for me so I went to the post office. The lady told me that this had been happening alot lately. My husband got one of these today. The outside was a perforated, tear-away letter, printed by computer (with a barcode under the address), presorted postage-paid mark from Tampa, marked “Personal and Confidential), and no return address.
Inside was a letter from “US Airlines” dated December 21, with a response deadline of January 9th. No travel voucher, but an offer to receive 2 round trip tickets for anywhere in the continental U.S. for up to $1,398. The phone number was 1-855-879-8217. And the letter was signed by “Vice President” Dana Kline.
No matter how legit something seems, I am always skeptical of these things. When you win a contest you didn’t enter, or a company wants to give you something for free (when you didn’t enter a contest), I assume it’s a scam. Even legitimate contests get something back for the prize: they get the contact information for everyone that entered so that they can legitimately send marketing materials to them. In marketing, it’s called lead generation.
But when I haven’t entered a contest myself, I assume it’s a scam. AND my redcoats definitely go off when they say, “We have attempted contacting you several times without success…” B.S.! If they had attempted contacting me multiple times, I would either have a previous letter or a voice mail to show for it!

It says I need to respond befor Jan 4th, 2013 and that I am qualified for an award of 2 airline tickes anywhere in the continental US with the retail value of this award is up to $1298.00. It goes on saying they have attempted to call me several times and for me to call 1-866-955-9622. I called and gave her the confirmation number at the bottom of the page. She said she is calling for a wholesale travel agency and want me to drive to Ormond Beach, Florida for their 90 minute seminar. Since we didn’t enter any contest and she said twice to bring a credit card, the red flags went up.

I received the letter today and called the number, it appears to be a type of a scam similar to a time share, they want me to attend a meeting with 15 other couples then give them credit card information in order to attend, and then for attending a sales pitch I would get a free gift. The tickets are for airports that are located some distance from me it’s not like I could use them without first flying some distance, I live in Iowa and all of the airports listed are on the east or west coast.
If you are interested in reading more go to travel and deals.com
I have gone to several Time share sale pitches in the past, I usually go with the idea that the time share people are willing to give me a night in a motel and buy me ticket to a dinner or show as a gamble that I am weak enough to fall for their scam, I simply hold them to the agreement which is if I listen to the sales pitch for 1 hour then I am free to walk out, and every time when I walk out at 1 hour they threaten to charge me for the room and dinner but never have, I find it entertaining, however my wife finds it sressful, however to drive 30 miles and listen to a sales pitch for a small gift, and no dinner is just a waste of my time. So untill they come up with a better scam I’m just staying home and watching tv.

got the same letter as all here described, called and did attend the 90 mn presentation. ID was required but never left our hands, nor did the credit card that was required. Just flashed it and back in the wallet.
The presentation is for a vacation travel club and the bottom line is it costs 10 grand to join and supposedly you get 5 weeks at a set price for life. The amazing part is they manage to make you feel like you’re stupid for not spending/investing so you can “save” on your vacation travel! Since we’re retired and already have a time share we enjoy, we thought what the heck, and sat thru the sales pitch(es). When you finally get the 3rd salesman, you know you’re nearly done!
After declining several “offers” we did receive a “passport” for 2 RT airfares but after checking out the website at
http://vacationpassportfaq.com/fly_america_vacation_passport.htm
have thrown it away; at the very least they will end up with $100 for their “Registration Activation Fee” which is (of course) non-refundable but is applied to taxes and fees.
The site also states that “All vacation offers are subject to Passport to Travel availability and promotions inventory. Flight schedules, airlines and participating airports are at the discretion of Passport to Travel”, and they reserve the “right to offer an alternate departure date and/or destination.” You also have to make the reservation through one of their “agents” and may have to pay an additional surcharge if the airport you want isn’t included in their list of “major international airports.”
SO three “simple” steps to your “free” airfare, with lots of conditions and restrictions attached, and likely MORE “opportunities” to be pitched to along the way.
We’ll chalk it up to providing a public service so anyone reading here knows what to expect.
You’re welcome! : )

I heard it was a scam, called the number to see what would transpire, and the woman that answered told me that it was an offer from the Marriot. It is basically a time share presentation-to sit through 2 hours and then receive the plane ticket vouchers. I still don’t know if it is legit, but seems like less of a scam than I had heard about. I would be curious to know if it really is a time share presentation, or an elaborate scam where you get nothing on the other side….but I’m not going to the Marriot, regardless.

I googled the Travel Union and found multiple threads where folks have received the same check…I did too. Turns out, it is a timeshare offer of some sort. One commentor stated they actually sat through the presentation. As far as I’m concerned their offer stinks as well..jumping thru hoops, restrictions, conditions…etc, etc. I’m not surprised since they tried luring me through deception with 2 round trip tickets to a non existent airline.

I received this, or something similar, from “American Rewards Center.” There is no hand writing or signature, and it includes some weird ticket-like thing at the bottom that is supposed to resemble a voucher or something. There is no signature and it is signed Awards Department, 1-855-232-0300. They claimed that they tried contacting me several times, gave me a claim number and a date I had to respond by so it would not be “transferred to the alternate.” It did not list a monetary value, only that the voucher was “good for a certificate for 2 round trip airlines tickets valid for travel in the continental US from most major city airports, including Washington, D.C.” (where I am). It had an underlined note saying it was not a timeshare or land sales offer. Very suspicious – no return address, logos, or anything.

I live in Florida and received one of these letters today. The envelope was hand addressed, and it was post marked from Phoenix, Arizona. The letter was typed on plain white paper; and at the top of the page was the name “United Airways”. I had never heard of United Airways, so I googled it, and found this web site. The letter indicated that I had won two free airline tickets; and that I should call 1-866-949-8020. The letter was signed by Jan Cane, Vice President. At the bottom of the letter was VV-28511.

It was from “United Airways” and had a 1-866-949-8022 number to call and signed by VP Jan Cane. I would hope that the FBI or someone through the USPS can file charges on these scammers! The one thing that set bells going off for me was no return address. It came from Phoenix, AZ! Hi, we received a letter last week from “American Airways”, I saw in internet that is a scam but my husband decired to go and confirm by himself. we went before yesterday to a meeting and for our surprise it is not a scam, American Airways is just the name of the marketing company that send the letter, but who gives the airline tickets is Legacy vacations, is a legal company, they are similar than timeshares, they explain you their vacation packages and cruises if you become member almost the same than timeshare but for me better and with more choices. anyways we did not take the offer and we received at the end the brochure with 2 roundtrip tickets for me and my husband, it is valid for 12 months and you can choose a city inside USA but just one of the cities they have on the list to choose, like 15 cities i think, we are going to san francisco. You just need to pay when you book a money order of 50.00 for fees, and you travel from American airline, delta or united. We live in Orlando and the 90 minutes presentation was in cocoa Beach, I don’t know about other states, but at least who lives in Fl should find out first, because sometimes we get panic right away thinking is “scam” and its not.
I forgot tell you guys, the 50.00 money order is just when you have everything ready after you book with the airline, not before, not in the presentation, and you should reserve your trip 60 days before your traveling day or 75 days before if you are planning to go in june, july or august..

Do the same thing, block your number before dialing their’s with the *67 and then have some fun. See how much of their time you can get them to waste.

Ann,
I thought the same thing you did. When my wife and I purchased our home we started seeing a ton of junk mail rolling in. I even called my mortgage broker and reamed the poor guy out, but it wasn’t him. It was our public servants at the county clerk’s office, where our real estate papers were filed. It’s one way governments make additional income. Scammers (and legitimate companies) can purchase pinpointed mailing lists tailor-made to their businesses. You want a list of everyone in your area who owns a Ford pick-up truck? Done! How about anyone who has recently filed for business permits or a DBA? Easy-cheesy! In recent years my county records office has sold my information to a slew of different businesses.
Because I register my motor vehicles here, I receive letters every week offering to buy my 10-year-old Ford F-150 and my wife’s 8-year-old Toyota Highlander. Ditto for my motorcycles – magazine subscription offers and catalogs specific not just to my brand of bike (Harley-Davidson) but also the fact that most of my motorcycles are over 30 years old!
I recently registered a DBA (“doing business as”) at the clerk’s office. Within one week I was receiving offers in that name – printing services, credit-card-processing companies and the like. A week! These direct mail advertisers don’t waste any time, do they?
Just thought you’d like to know.

I got one as well. I do find it sort of funny that it’s signed “D.Kline” as in, decline. And Jane Cae, sounds a lot like “JK” which is the abbreviation for Just Kidding. I looked on the back of the letter and it says, “Certain restrictions apply. Call for details. Taxes and registration fees and/or processing fees are the responsibility of the recipient. This promotion is not sponsored by or affiliated with US Airlines or any other third party business referenced in this promotion but they are major suppliers.” Whatever that means. It’s not affiliated with a madeup airline, but we use their fake letterhead. Mindboggling.

We received a similiar letter. We called and went to the sales pitch in SLC Utah at a popular hotel chain. They are selling (trying to scam you into buying) a software license for Reservation Services International (RSI), a discount travel company. The Company name the sellers were using was Vacation Smart international. You have to listen to a 90 to 120 minute sales pitch on different levels of purchasing either Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze….Etc. Anyway, you do get a “Voucher” for 2 airline tickets for Delta, American, United, etc. whether you buy the vacation package or not. You have to pay fees, 4.95 processing, 50.00 per ticket and another 59.00 per ticket if they don’t book it for you. Well, we haven’t paid the fees yet, but I believe it was all a waste of time after googling RSI & Vacation Smart international. Like they say, “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is”.

I received the same (almost the same) letter as the rest of you. It has my correct name and address listed with a postmark from Phoenix, Arizona. The outside of the letter is hand written and the letter is signed by Lea Kale/Vice President. It is from United Airways and has no return address. That is the first indication that this is not a legitimate giveaway. If there is no return address, it’s usually bogus. And for the record this is a not a legitimate giveaway in the sense that you just call up, and they confirm you want it, then send you the tickets in the mail. That’s what everyone would like to believe and thinks they are deserving of something for nothing. That is what this society has been geared towards believing. “Something for nothing.” The reason that this is not against the law is that they operate within the law and do provide a service but at a cost. And yes, you will pay for it in the end, after you have meet with their representatives and set through a long and stressful sales seminar. Now I believe in getting your monies worth on a purchase or other financial transaction, but face it – you get what you pay for on anything you buy. My suggestion to everyone is to educate your friends and family. Show them the letter and let them know that this is a high pressure sales program with no guarantee of getting anything in return (for free) and that they might end up being taken advantage of for a lot of money. And keep in mind that being taken advantage of is not always against the law. I have shown this letter to a number of friends and family, let them know to keep their money and not be taken advantage of by these aggressive business people. Business people, who by the way are operating within the law. If it was illegal they would have been shut down by our consumer protection agencies, set up to police them. And by the way I work for the police department and see this kind of thing all the time. A lot of so called scams are against the law and some scams are not. You have to educate yourself and make good choices with your money. I tell people – if you didn’t call (telephone/mail) them first then don’t do business with them. Stay smart people.

On the back it gives you restrictions may apply spiel and shows the presorted standard U.S. Postage Paid Tampa, FL Permit #78 as the postage mark.
I just Googled it to see how prevalent it was. It is sad that so many people fall for these scams. I received my first Nigerian Prince having to get his money out of the country in 1996, and just shook my head thinking what a waste of time, then I saw how many People were falling for these things.
I guess common sense has gone the ways of the people who sue because they spilled their hot coffee on themselves, yet if it was cooled by the time they drove a few blocks to work, they would call and complain it wasn’t hot enough
I first heard about a scam when I was 8 or 9 in the 60s and read in the paper that a woman sued Safeway because her child fell off of the horse ride in front of the store. Over the years they have disappeared from stores because of the liability that people have no common sense. Remember don’t put your hand in a meat grinder, you may be injured, it is printed on the box;

IT IS NOT A SCAM!!!!
What’s funny is that each and everyone of you that commented never went any further than receiving the letter. You wonder why they are still in business and have not been “shut down?” It is because it is not a scam. It is a play with words, with American Airways, US Airlines, etc…of which NONE are claimed to be legitimate airlines. It is a MARKETING tactic. It is NOT a scam. It is marketing! They have been in business for years. The tickets are legitimate, and you will not be asked to pay for anything or have to “obligate” yourself to get them. But none of you would know any of that because you never took the time to actually go through the harmless and MONEYLESS process.
Funny how easily people just listen to what people say and run with it, instead of checking it all out for themselves. The company is doing quite well, and many people are very happy to have not let their fears and skepticism overcome those discount tickets.
Do you know that the BBB is not legitimate. Why don’t you google BBB 20/20 (for the investigative report television show)…they aired it and showed how much it is not what you think it is.
Sandy,
Your criticism of the Better Business Bureau is legitimate. The organization has rightly been the subject of complaints for failure to aggressively pursue companies engaged in obvious fraud, and for assigning higher BBB ratings to organizations which are BBB members, as opposed to those which are not. But that’s the only thing in your comment that comes anywhere near the truth.
The airplane ticket “award” letter is a scam. I’m holding one of their letters in my hand right now. It bears no return address, nor any other identifying indicia. No legitimate company would conceal its physical address like this.
The letterhead says “US Airlines.” Unfortunately, there is no such company as “US Airlines.” It just doesn’t exist. There’s “US Airways, United Airlines, even UPS Airlines (packages only — no passengers). But, there is no US Airlines, as much as the letter writer would like recipients to believe there is.
Furthermore, if there’s no catch to the offer, how does the company make money? You want people to believe an organization that basically goes around handing out free airplane tickets worth nearly $1,400 to people all over the country is a legitimate, profitable enterprise. Well, you’re half right. They’re certainly profitable. That’s because they scam everyone who replies to their letters by charging all kinds of “registration” and “processing” fees, vastly exceeding the value of the tickets. That is, assuming the recipient ever receives any tickets.
Lastly, as a lawyer, I read over my copy of the letter with care. Whomever drafted this letter got some guidance from an attorney. The letter bears a printed disclaimer on its reverse clearly intended to allow the letter writer to skate as close as possible to criminal fraud without going over the line. In my humble opinion, it’s insufficient to get them off the hook. If the US Attorney’s Office, Federal Postal Inspectors, or even the Florida State Attorney’s Office, went after them vigorously, they’d get convicted and shut down.
As retired law enforcement, I intend to contact all these agencies, and do my best to see that the people behind this scheme are prosecuted. Let’s see what happens…

What does everyone think? A marketing ploy that involves using made up airline names on the letterhead meant to be similar to real airlines. No return address. Thank you so much for having this information so easily accessible. I just went through my deployed husband’s mail and found this letter. Thinking I was about to miss an important deadline, I began to dial the number before I stopped myself to ask: “Is this legitimate?” I quickly did a search and found your site which clearly answered my question and saved me from unknown and unimaginable headache (or worse). Thanks.

My husband received not one but TWO Award Notifications in the mail today. It looks like a check and says in small print at the bottom “mys be redeemed for travel certificate”. Sue Dali signed it!!!! =) They’ve attempted contacting him on several occasions and now it’s his last chance to respond. Um yeah. My response will be throwing it in the trash. Glad that Google exists so I could look it up.

I live in Florida, received a $1,350.00 voucher from Phoenix Az, signed by Sue Dali that was100% printed material in one of those perforated post cards. Told the wife that if we called it was probably a scam looking for personal information. Googled it, and yep, I was right. Roughly 10 years ago when my parents were in their 80s they fell victim to a scam (out of Toronto Canada) and were bilked for more money than I care to think about and the US Post Office and the FBI don’t give a damn !

It’s still going. Got one today from “US Airlines” from VP “Dana Kline”. The retail value has gone up since this started, so at least they are paying attention. $1,398.
When I first read it, I read “US Airlines” and “US Airways” and was fooled until I read “We have attempted contacting you several times without success.” Um…nope.
But, yeah, I always check anything like this on the Internet before believing it. Turns out, I never win anything.

Ours was a postcard postmarked in Las Vegas, using the American Airlines name and logo, addressed to my husband: no return address, no signature (not even a name). Title: Fly-Away Promotion. Offer: “In celebration of our new year packages, we’ve selected you to receive 2 round-trip airfares to anywhere in the contiguous United States; good for the next 12 months. Call within 48 hours and receive a 3 day 2 night hotel stay at major brands.” (Note the poor use of the English language.) “Call 1-888-211-0378 and mention your promo code.”

She also said they are just a company trying to get their name out there. I hope there’s a high pedestal in hell for these losers.

Dana Kline, Vice President now works for the National Tourism Development Council at 611 Pennsylvania Ave SE, Washington DC 20003, but somehow she managed to keep the same telephone number [(855) 879-8217] that she had when working for the airline! The offer is the same though, “I am pleased to inform you that you have qualified for an award of 2 roundtrip airline tickets. Congratulations. These tickets are valid …award is up to $1,389.00. Certain restrictions apply. Just for calling, receive a complimentary Caribbean cruise for two!*” BTW the address given above is actually for a major package delivery service that also has storefronts.

I got the same letter and first thing I did was get on the internet and google (free ticket letter from US Airlines) and it brought up this scam report from BBB. So i called the number on the letter and got a person after waiting 5 minutes on hold, no big deal. Once they answered I told them their letter was a scam and that its on the BBB website with lots of replies from people saying the same thing. The lady named Marrissa told me of course that it’s not a scam and that they get that a lot from callers. She said all you have to do is sign up to go to a 90 minute seminar/speech about their new company in your area, which in my area was at the local Holiday inn suites and of course they will try and sell stuff to you but that your not obligated to buy any of it and at the end you will receive your two free tickets. So that was the “certain restrictions apply”. I’m not signing up to do this, for one I don’t have the money to take a trip even if the plane ride was free you still have to have money once you get to where your going. I just wanted to give a more detailed report of what the letter means….hope it helped. Thanks

Got this letter in the mail last week. Finally called the number yesterday. I was skeptical from the get go. If I had actually WON something, wouldn’t the company name and address be listed? So I gave the gal my award number, she said I qualified for two free airline tickets anywhere in the US. That the reason behind this was in affiliate to a travel agency near me that was hoping to get their name up by word of mouth advertising and that by giving away these free tickets, it would possibly create a good repoire with consumers enough to make them want to use the travel agency in the future. In order to claim the tickets I would be required to visit the travel agency and I think she said I had to tour the show room and talk with the staff briefly. She said that the offer however is targeted to a specific demographic. Anyone over 18 that is living with their spouse or significant other. My girlfriend and I are not engaged nor do we live together, when I told her this, she said they were sorry but unfortunately I did not qualify for the two free airline tickets.
Once she denied me the airline tickets she said that they did have another offer, and that they did not want me to go empty handed. She offered me a 2 day cruise on Carribean Cruises to the Bahamas. It was expense paid, everything except beverages was covered on the 2 day cruise to the bahamaas. All I would have to pay was the tax on the tickets which was $118. As I drilled them with my skepticism, I was still very curious. Alot of it sounded good, and every time I threw a question their way they had decent answers to handle my rebuttals. I ended up trying this out. I used my Mastercard which has fraud protection on it, so at any point I can call them and have them refund the charges. I am somewhat, but not too worried about this. I ended up going for it and after they secured the $118, they offered me an extension on the trip to stay in Orlando and enjoy Florida at a deeply discounted rate.
Like I said before, I was skeptic, I still am, but if I get tickets in the mail, I will let you all know if this turned out to be true or not. If I don’t get them within a week or so, I will be calling Mastercard to refund the charges and do whatever they do with fraudsters!

Post Dated: 09 April 2013 PM2 L
Letter Dated: April 8th 2013
Received: April 12th 2013

VP: Kim Dae (who, coincidentally, was the president of South Korea and died in 2009)
My City: Fort Lauderdale, FL
I called. The company was identified as “Travel Awards Division” and when I questioned them on it they said they are an awards fulfillment center which works for various travel agencies.
They also claimed that US Airlines is a new travel agency which wants to get the “word out” about them. I will have to show up at their “showroom” for a 90 min presentation to get the tickets (and pay taxes and fees on them).
The first call claimed that I have to call a second number for their confirmation center to get the address of the showroom but they did tell me that it was on SW 6th St in Plantation, FL (just down the street).
Called a number I got from someone else’s letter (1-866-461-2380 with vp Britney Hunt) and they gave me the showroom location as Courtyard Fort Lauderdale Plantation (which, by Google, is a Courtyard by Marriott located at 7780 SW 6th St., Plantation, Fl 33324, which rents meeting rooms).
Have appt for Thursday at 8pm. Contemplating going just for kicks. “Hey, this ‘showroom’ looks like a Hotel! What gives?!?”
So far they have not asked for my credit card but they did tell me to bring it.

I’d seen this before and actually attended one of their presentations a few years ago in South Bend, Indiana. I knew it was a scam almost as soon as I sat down. I asked them to demo their website as they promised you you’d be able to book your vacation online. This made them uncomfortable and they took me out of the large room into the hallway afraid I might make a scene. Needless to say, their website had no functionality and certainly didn’t do anything they promised it would. Anyway, that was a few years ago but I received another letter last week, the exact letter as described above from US Airlines. I contacted them and learned they are at the Holiday Inn IPFW & Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I then called the Holiday Inn and spoke to a manager and learned they are under contract with the hotel unitl May 5th, 2013. I then called the Channel 15 WANE news hotline in Fort Wayne and asked them to Google the telephone number and research this group and then visitthem while they are presenting. I sure hope they do!

Yes it’s obviously a scam. But, what is the scam? I would like to hear from someone who fell for it, and what were the details. So many people calling for one agency or another to put a stop to it, but what is “it”, stop what? A false promise of airline tickets. If we start cracking down on “false promises” sent by mail we would stop receiving a lot of campaign mail as well. Which I wouldn’t mind myself.
