Facebook will soon be launching “verified accounts.” These have been created to allow celebrities and other recognizable figures to register their Facebook accounts under their real name but also have the ability to display their known nicknames, according to CNN.
Facebook has been known for only allowing users to both register and display their name using their real identy. Now, users to whom people can currently subscribe (but are not friends with) will be able to submit their government ID as proof that they are who they say they are online, CNN reported. Celebrities like Stefani Germanotta can use the display name Lady Gaga on Facebook and other users can be sure that it is the real Lady Gaga.
The goals of the new accounts are to allow users to easily find, follow, and connect to their favoite celebrities, sports players, etc., while also allowing those with the “verified accounts” to get more prominent displays on the lists of “People to Subscribe To.”
