BBB is issuing an urgent SCAM alert cautioning businesses and consumers about an email that looks like it is from BBB, with the subject line “Complaint from your customers.” This e-mail is fraudulent; ignore its contents and delete it immediately. If you have already clicked on a link in the e-mail, run a full virus scan of your computer.
The e-mails have return addresses that BBB does not use (one example is riskmanager@bbb.org) and it is signed with the address of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, the national office of the BBB system. The e-mail contains a link to a non-BBB web site. Do NOT click on the link.
BBB is working with law enforcement to determine its source and stop the fraudulent campaign.
This is what the email looks like (click to enlarge):

I just received one of these and thought I should check it out before clicking on the link. Thanks to BBB.org for being on top of things and posting this notice so quickly!

I also recieved one of these emails today, 2/27/2012, of course claiming the same thing, and freaked me out till i did a quick web search if it was a hoax.
I deleted it, but now I wish I had kept it to see what tracking I could to give to you whatever info I can.
It looked offiical , from bbb.org, and with two phone numbers in it, both were a 713 or a 701 or 703 area code, like i said I deleted it, so not perfect from memory on area code, but one of the above is it, but I almost wanted to call to be sure if it was not a hoax.

Does anyone know a fix for whatever this malicious email does? I have run a virus scan of my computer and nothing is detected, yet, I cannot get onto the internet at all. Something has changed on my computer ever since I got the email.

Molly – All I can advise is to run a virus scan with a quality anti-virus software. That should take care of the issue.

Greg-I have the smae problem as Molly. I received it yesterday-12-13-2011. I have done several scans and it has not alleviated the problem. Any fixes?

For all you know this email was probably sent by “Quality Anti-Virus Software” company to scare people into buying their program. I have never seen these emails traced back to the source which should not be too hard to do. I used to work at a electronics store and whenever these alerts or emails were going around or were reported our Anti-Virus programs sales spiked significantly

Molly, the same happened to me. I ran all kinds of virus scans also which detected and fixed a trojan virus. I have access to the internet but not my emails. It opens and then just closes. Have you found a solution yet.

I’m not sure if its a coincidence or not but I did a search for my company on your website about an hour ago. Just an FYI that my company is not listed with the BBB. I just received that same email about 20 minutes ago. Could it be possible they are monitoring the search on your site?

This IS “malicious software” and it has taken over my computer. I received two BBB emails and clicked onto the linked report within the email since I run a business. I have run full virus scans constantly and “many severe threats” are found. This is a nightmare for me. Not only did I receive the 2 emails, but a phone call as well! Our caller ID showed the number coming from the National BBB in Arlington. Only the phone never rang. I called the number back and there is a recording from the BBB giving their business hours and then it just ends…no more contact, and no way of calling Arlington, VA. as that same recorded message automatically comes on.
Good Luck BBB….hope you can track these lunatics down!
BTW….not always, but often, especially around the holidays, hackers are sometimes paid by software companies to hack into computers wreaking havoc. This is done so the consumer runs out and buys more virus software making for product sales.

Clicked the link/responded, thinking it was weird but before really thinking about it… I was on my mobile device (iPhone) and it wouldn’t load whatever they sent me. Think it will do any damage? This is nuts.

To those who believe they’ve been infected I would suggest downloading and running Malwarebyte’s Anti-Malware. It’s free and very good at rooting out trojans, worms, spyware and other forms of malware when traditional anti-virus software doesn’t do the trick.

Thanks to the BBB for being on top of this. I receive at least 2-3 of these a day now…I have never clicked on the link just because I believe that if there was a \valid\ complaint made against our company we would not be notified via email. Hopefully the BBB will be able to find the source of these malicious emails. My rule of thumb when it comes to these kinds of emails it to \delete\. Thanks again!!

If you are able to do it, sometimes you can take the hard drive out of one computer and connect it to another computer. When you log into the main drive, you can run MalwareBytes on the secondary drive. If this is not an option, try following the directions from this link:

Consumers nationwide are reporting a new round of phishing email scams using the BBB name and email address, this time targeted at accountants.
This latest scam uses a BBB.org email address in conjunction with the American Institute of CPAs logo and name. The message informs recipients that their CPA license is being terminated due to tax fraud allegations and encourages them to click on a link and reply to the charges. The link leads to a third party website that downloads a virus on to the recipient’s computer.
This email scam primarily targets accountants, but BBB has gotten reports of other professionals receiving the emails. The image below is a sample email.
Steps to take:
Do not reply or click on the link in the email
Forward fake BBB emails to phishing@council.bbb.org
Delete the email

Hi,
I received this mail in my client mailbox. I am from India and work for a US based client. I clicked it initially but disconnected from the internet and forced shutdown my system within a minute as I was not sure if it was a legit mail. Before doing the disconnect and shutdown, a new window opened in chrome asking me to allow JAVA to run which I did not do. Upon restarting, a disk check ran and once my system restarted, I got a Malware notice that went something like KB04***.exe which I got quarantined and subsequently deleted. How would I know if I still have some problem? Is there some defined characteristics of the virus/malware infection that tells us that we have a problem?

Are the links in the emails consistent or do they change? We’re getting a few of these today, and I’m going to try to block the URLs. So far, I don’t have the URLs for the emails we’ve been getting, so I don’t know just yet.

We too have received this email multiple times and it slowly evolves looking more and more authentic I know that if it was the BBB they would call or send a real letter so have just been deleting them hopefully this helps others in the future.

Curiosity killed the cat…i knew better…but i clicked on the attachment.
I have gotten this email several times at my Yahoo address but each time it looks more and more authentic. Yahoo didn’t run the attachment like it usually does before allowing it to open.
When i opened the attachment, which was suppose to be details about the complaint, it was a website which appeared to be in Portuguese possibly. Quickly, closed the website and deleted the email from my work computer but i knew i had been hit with something. My corporate virus protection never detected it nor did it warn me that i had just been hit.
This morning, i ran my virus scan and a trojan was found on my C drive, in my document folder. The trojan was removed but now it is sitting in my quanantined folder until an IS tech can get to my computer. My IS dept. told me i shouldn’t have run the virus scan, that i may have actually allowed the trojan more access to my computer….but my virus protection didn’t even tell me i had been hit!
Does anyone know the amount of damage this virus causes or the type of info this trojan is looking for?

Wish I could say I was smart enough to not open the link. I instantly ran my virus protection when I noticed the message was sent to multiple addresses. I still lost all my pics and documents. My virus protection kept finding things and removing them I have about 25 things in quarantine. Also I had to keep restarting my virus protection…and part of my virus protection is in the quarantine now…not sure. But it is always best to run your internet through a separate user account from the administrators account on your pc…I did not do this…now I wish I had. Lesson learned…LESSONS learned

I received this email today and figured it wasn’t valid, but was glad I did some checking and found this site’s information. Aside from “Bureau” being spelled incorrectly in the subject line and improper grammar used throughout the email, the website that the link (“APPEAL REPORT”) would have directed me to was suspect (http://mathias-aufschneider.fr/bbbcmpln.html). wow….this has been going on for awhile, hasn’t it?
Just got one today in my ‘spam’ folder. Deleted it right away, considering I don’t have a business and, therefore, no customers!
Sorry, I didn’t keep any info on it for you.
I belong to some ‘groups’ that do have small on-line businesses and I’ll do my best to warn them.
Thanks!

Attention:
I am a business owner and a victim of the Better Business Bureau Virus. On 01 15 2013 I received an email from the BBB New York indicating I had a customer complaint and I could respond by answering the questions in the attached zip file document. The signature at the end of the email seemed to be valid.
I was suspicious and quickly googled the Better Business Bureau website to see if bbb.org actually existed. Since I am used to being contacted by various business entities my suspicion was quickly gone.
So I opened the attachment and found an error window that indicated the file could not be opened and to download again. I replied to the email indicating that I could not open the attachment thinking this to be a legitimate situation.
Approximately 25 minutes went by before I noticed that I my email was attempting to download a 20 plus megabyte file shown by the outlook progress bar. This was not normal, I quickly pulled the network connection and killed outlook.
I performed a complete virus scan using your software and no virus was found -I had the latest updates.
I worked on the computer for two days, downloading antivirus software and scanning the computer with no problems or viruses found. Today at 1:30 I was running a scan with yet another virus –malware removal software and to my complete amazement in the task bar lower right was big bold letters BBB!!!
I killed the machine and I am now reloading the operating system and files. I am glad I have complete backups!!!
I cannot believe that there are individuals out there that would spend their life doing something like this to anyone. I hope that someone catches this person and they go to prison for a long time.

Simply updating the string to show this scam is still alive and well. We also received one from Bill_Dunn@newyork_bbb.org. I can usually easily pick out the scams without a second thought, but this one made me – at least – pause for a minute to read more carefullly given the legitimate look, feel and scraps of plausible information in which the scam was wrapped. Keep vigilant!
