Better Business Bureau is issuing an urgent SCAM alert cautioning businesses and consumers about an email that is purporting to be from a bbb.org email address about a recently filed complaint. The email contains a dangerous attachment regarding a complaint and appears to direct recipients to the BBB website. This is a scam – BBB does not send complaints as attachments via email.
The email appears to come from a fakeBBBemployee claiming that the recipient needs to review this matter and advise the BBB of their position. From there, the email appears to direct the recipient to the BBB website, but actually directs them to an outside link. This email is fraudulent and does not originate from BBB. The email attachment and link are malicious and we are strongly advising to not open or click them.
Should you receive such an email, please disregard its message, and report any information received to BBB’s Scam Portal, and then delete it. If you have clicked on the link, immediately do a virus scan.
So glad to find this post. I received an email apparently from the BBB about a complaint filed against my business. I assumed it was phishing, but was planning to make a phone call Monday to confirm. Thanks for saving me the hassle!

Today we got an email from James Siena purporting to be from the Better Business Bureau (not in my state, plus I haven’t joined the BBB). Because the alleged complaint was in the form of an attachment, we were suspicious & didn’t open it. We will mark it as spam.

Hi,
I believe BBB need to change the respond-to-a-complaint policy from their website. I received the email and thought that it must be a phishing scam.
So I went to BBB website and tried to look for the claim through the business site. I found that we have to respond with the “link emailed to you” which is the catch for the scammer.
Please correct that the complaint report WON’T be sent by email to avoid the phishing scam.

We here at American Exteriors LLC received just such an email from an unknown source. Thankfully, we have a long standing relationship with the BBB in multiple states and were able to recognize the format as different from other correspondence we have received from the BBB.

I receive these scams almost daily.
However the most interesting part is the date I first started receiving the scams.
I met a client at Starbucks and make the mistake of stating I had never had a compliant about our work. Within 24 hours I started receiving the fake emails… interesting..

Woke up this morning to find 20 of these in my inbox. Knew it was a scam and erased, but they are still sending them as I type this, so it is becoming more annoying than anything else trying to clean up the inbox.
On the bright side the e-mail they sending to was designed for this, and not our main business e-mail.

I received the same email from Anita Emil on May 4 2012 about my business and I haven’t published it yet.
I’m not open for business yet and I have a complaint. Ya right.

i received 2 today lol i just got my business lic. an got 2 complaints before i even open my business oh yeah an 3 from the fbi and 1 from the irs thanks yahoo for sending them straight to my spam box

I got that same email and was suspicious so I googled it and found this page. Fortunately I did not download the attachment or open the link. Thanks for posting this alert. Had I not found this page I would have thought it was legit.

Yes… just received this stating case: 81720647 and from Donna Beazleigh
My guess is that they are getting email addresses from a list of small businesses as I am a 1 person company!

I just received the same message stating Better Business Bureau as well (I don’t own a business, but I wanted to make sure it wasn’t the company I work for).
Thank you for confirming it is indeed a scam.
My first clue should have been the poor grammar in the first sentence.

Ahh..they never stop.. 1.8.2013 rcvd one today… of course the link “PLAINT REPORT” embedded opens to another site all together outside of the BBB… the BBB mimicking that of Arlington VA. They put Lucas Wilson as signed by.
First clue, it came to my Email…then…Addressed to my Email and not my Name. Second, they didn’t put a customers name, nor what the problem was. Last but not least just read it
lol! Hope it helps to avoid someone else getting ripped off !!

We are a Michigan company and have an A+ BBB rating, the folowing email was sent to an arbitrary employee, not the manager responsible for the account. We immediately felt it was fraudulent then found this blog.
