Renting a Car? Should You Use a Credit or Debit Card?

In most cases when you rent a car or check into a hotel they ask for your credit card, but they’re not just taking an imprint of your card say’s Adam Dachis of lifehacker. A hold is actually being placed on your available balance for the entire estimated bill. This is ok when it comes to credit cards, but can become an issue when dealing with debit if you don’t have enough money in your account.

Hotels and rental car agencies take holds to protect themselves by making sure you won’t spend more than you have while on vacation.  More simply put, if the money isn’t available for use then there is no way you can use it. This type of hold can easliy be reduced on a credit card with a phone call, but often times takes much longer with debit.
