New standards went into effect yesterday regarding cribs in the United States. Under the new standards, mattress supports and crib slats must be strengthened, and drop-side rail cribs are prohibited. These rules apply to full-size and non full-size cribs and they also include cribs being sold and manufactured. Cribs will also have to go through more thorough testing.
The new standards also apply to cribs used at child care centers. (Child care centers and places of public accommodation have until December 28, 2012 to update their cribs to meet the new standards.)
