The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has issued an alert regarding emails sent to employers posing as potential job applicants. The emails are in response to online job ads and have embedded malware that allows the attacker to obtain the online banking credentials. Once the credentials are obtained, the cyber criminals changed settings to establish wire transfers to their own accounts.
In the release, the FBI recommends that potential employers be vigilant when opening emails from prospective employees. Running a virus scan prior to opening any email attachments is recommended. It is also recommended that businesses consider using a separate computer system to conduct financial transactions.
If you believe that you have been the target of one of these attacks, contact your financial institutions, the FBI and report it at www.ic3.gov.
