It is important to remember that most sources of grant money don't give grants to individuals to meet personal need. Grants usually are given to serve a social good, such as bringing jobs to an area, training under-employed youth, preserving history, funding soup kitchens or art museums or researching medical issues.

BBB offers the following tips to avoid these and similar scams:

  • Start with Trust®. Check with before doing business or sending money.
  • While it’s true that the Federal government does give out billions of dollars in grant money every year, most grants are given to help students pay for college or for specifically defined reasons, such as research or to help fund businesses in particular industries.
  • There are no government grants to pay consumers' personal bills, and there are NO government grants for which individuals were entitled simply by being taxpayers and citizens.
  • There’s no reason to pay for software or guides when applying for government grants. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources manages a website ( which provides comprehensive information regarding grants offered through the U.S. government.
