BBB of South Central Louisiana reminds you to be vigilant before hiring a contractor in the wake of Hurricane Isaac. Many contractors are reputable; however, some unethical operators may attempt to take advantage of storm victims. Here are some quick tips:
Obtain at least three estimates. Make sure that the estimates are itemized and the same work and variations should be noted.
Ask for the license number and verify with the Louisiana Licensing Board for Contractors.
Have a written contract for your repairs and understand it thoroughly before you sign. Be certain the contract includes the contractor’s name, street address, telephone number and state license number.
BBB advises you to be wary of businesses:
soliciting door to door in unmarked vehicles who claim to be in the area solely to help storm victims.
willing to do the job at an unusually low price
requiring full or substantial payment before work begins
offering to work for you only if you secure the necessary permits
refusing to provide you with a written estimate of contract
asking you to sign an estimate or authorization before you have decided to actually hire them.
