It’s March Madness and it seems that the nation has gone wild for basketball! But BBB Serving Metro Atlanta is mad too but in a much different way. We’re rooting for our teams but we’re rooting more for less victims of consumer fraud.
BBB Serving Metro Atlanta gets mad when:
Scammers take advantage of our senior citizens by calling and telling them that their grandchild has been hurt while on vacation and needs money for hospital bills. They panic and send money without checking it out first. We get mad because they lose money to con artists playing on their emotions!
People with no ethics sit behind a computer and send phishing emails making people believe their bank account, credit card or store accounts have been compromised. The email requests personal and financial information leaving the consumer a victim of identity theft. We get mad when victims of identity theft are left to clean up the mess and clear up their good names and credit when these phishing emails are sent.
Place ads for people to work-at-home and make ridiculous amounts of money, especially preying on those in dire financial straits. Victims send what little money they have believing they will make hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars each month stuffing envelopes or assembling products. Truth is these types of offers never pay the amount of money promised and most “companies” are nothing more than a post office box and an advertisement ran in a publication. By the time a consumer files a complaint or law enforcement becomes involved, the scammer is long gone. This makes us mad!
Consumers get a fake check! There are many types of fake check scams, but it all starts when someone gives you a realistic-looking check or money order and asks you to send cash somewhere in return. It's phony, and so is the person's story, but that may take weeks to discover. Now your bank wants the money back. However, just because you can get the cash doesn't mean the check or money order is good. Ultimately, you are responsible for the checks or money orders you deposit or cash. That's how the scam works and it makes us mad!
But one thing we’re mad about in a very good way is BBB’s Scam Stopper! At Scam Stopper you can report a scam, learn the science of scams and sign up to receive alerts on scams and more.
