On April 6, 2022, I purchased a Rheem HVAC system installed for $4,155. On March 16, 2024, less than 2 years later, the system was diagnosed with an Evaporator Coil Leak in the Air Handler. Under the warranty, the cost to replace the coil and repair the unit would be $1,050.00. All of which was labor, parts (Freon) and a $100 fee, not covered by the warranty. The price for a new uninstalled Air Handler was approximately the same amount. If the unit failed again, I would continue to have to pay the Labor, Parts (Freon) and Fees to fix the unit. I believe the failure, after less than 2 years of service, of the air handler, with an expected lifespan of 15 to 20 years, was due to a production failure and should be the responsibility of Rheem to replace or repair the unit back to its original specifications at no cost to the customer. The warranty should continue for the remainder of the 10 years.A warranty that requires the customer to pay out of pocket the price of a new unit, WHEN THE PRODUCT FAILS AFTER ONLY 10 To 13 PERCENT OF ITS EXPECTED LIFESPAN, is of little value.I believe a fair offer from the standpoint of the customer would be to pay up to 13% ($136.50) of the true cost of the repairs necessary to return the Air Handler to its working condition including all labor, parts (Freon) and fees.
