“Small businesses represent an ideal at the heart of our Nation's promise—that with ingenuity and hard work, anyone can build a better life,” said President Barack Obama in the official proclamation of National Small Business Week on Friday, May 9, 2014.

National Small Business Week is an opportunity to recognize the local organizations that create the foundations of communities across the United States. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration:

  • There are 16,184 small businesses in Alaska according to the most recent available data, which account for 55.6% of private sector employment.
  • There are 90,672 small businesses in Oregon according to the most recent available data, which account for 57.2% of private sector employment.
  • There are 147,948 small businesses in Washington State according to the most recent available data, which account for 55.7% of private sector employment.
  • There are three million small businesses in America that account for 54% of all U.S. sales.
  • Small businesses provide 55% of all jobs in America.
  • The 600,000 plus franchised small businesses in the U.S. provide jobs for some eight million people.
