I called Ocean Breeze Motel this morning to check if they had availability next week. I asked the young woman who answered the phone what her name was to which she responded “the manager”. I then asked her again politely for her name to which she again responded the manager. I then asked her if she was going to give me her name...which she replied...”it depends on why you want it”. I simply stated I liked to know who I was talking to. At that point she hung up on me. I called back and a male named Michael answered the phone. When I told him I had a cat, he informed me dogs are allowed, but not cats. I inquired why their advertisements state their place is “pet friendly” when that is no so. I questioned whether this practice might be false advertising, to which Michael replied “ well that’s the way it is”. In 2010, I almost purchased this motel due to the good reputation the previous owners had developed through the years. It is sad to see how customers are treated today. Good business practice is to identify who you are when answering the phone in a pleasant manner. Oh yeah...that’s right...they don’t have to....they are “the management”.

    Ocean Breeze Motel Response

We have the right to refuse service to anyone we see fit. You have been added to a Blacklist with this motel. Stating the reason is not important as I would not display your information publicly. You not only called once but numerous times over and over, blocking our lines, when you were told we had no availability for a cat, after it was explained why. As far as cats, we as management enforce the rules, we do not make them. For whatever reason deamed by the owners of this motel cats are prohibited. This is very common in most hotels, if you were to research. I apologize that you were not accomodated but not getting your way is not a reason to slander someone's name. Also, this business has gone from a 8.2 to a 9.9 rating since this management team took over and our reviews speak for themselves, as well as our customer service interactions.

    Customer Response

Thank you for your passionate reply. I feel the need to reply to your response as many of your allegations are not correct. 1. I am surprised to find I have been added to a black list, as I have never stayed there before. It's impossible to refuse services to someone you have never met. 2. You have my permission to display any public information you have about me. My reputation in Florence is beyond reproach. 3. I called twice, not "numerous times over and over, blocking our lines". I called once to inquire whether you had availability, and was hung up on by a young caustic female who refused to give me her name. I then called back and a young male named Michael answered the phone. When I was told cats were not accepted, I attempted to explain to him Ocean Breeze Motel advertises they are "pet friendly', and they might want to consider changing this as it could be considered false advertising, to which he said "that's the way it is". The legal definition of a pet is defined as: any animal that has commonly been kept as a pet in family households in the United States, such as dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters. If you accept dogs only, change your advertisements on Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, Priceline, Hotels, TripAdvisor, etc. to reflect this, please. I then hung up and never called back again. I have my phone records as proof I am telling the truth and you are not. 4. I have researched your allegation that other hotels/motels also don't allow cats. I have traveled throughout the whole U.S. for 50+ years and this is the first time this has happened. 5. The basic difference between libel and slander is that libel is published defamation, while slander is fleeting, mostly verbal. There five requisite elements of a defamation lawsuit: A. A statement of fact; for defamation to have occurred, somebody must have made the statement that is considered defamatory. B. A published statement. C. The statement caused injury. D. The statement must be false. E. The statement is not privileged. 6. Everything I wrote is true, and YOU libeled ME. I am seriously considering taking legal action against YOU for defamation of character and libel. Your response to this reply will determine how I respond. Your feeble actions to blame me for your unprofessional conduct in an attempt to prevent this complaint from being posted on the BBB site is additional evidence of your poor management skills. I run a multi million dollar company, and if one of my employees responded to my complaint as you did...they would be fired immediately. I formally request my original complaint to be permanently added to the Ocean Breeze Motel webpage on the Florence Oregon BBB website.
