BBB Recommends Top Ten Tax Filing Tips

With Tax Season upon us, it is time to start the tax filing process.  The Better Business Bureau along with the Internal Revenue Service, recommends the following top ten tips to ensure an accurate tax
return and a faster refund.

Start Gathering Your Records - Round up any documents or forms that you’ll need when filing your taxes to support your income or to claim your deductions when filing your return.

Be On The Lookout - W2’s and 1099’s should have arrived by now as you will need it to complete your return.

Use Free File - Use brand-name tax software or online fillable forms through Free File. Everyone can find an option to prepare their tax return and e-file it for free, if you made $57,000 or less. If you made more or are comfortable preparing your own tax return, there’s Free File Fillable Forms, the electronic versions of IRS paper forms.

Try IRS e-file - IRS e-file has become the safe, easy and most common way to file a tax return. Nearly all tax preparers use e-file now and many are now required by law to e-file. Combine e-file with direct deposit and you can get your refund in as few as 10 days.  Find an authorized IRS e-file provider at

Consider Other Filing Options - There are many options for filing your tax return, including preparing it yourself or go to a tax preparer. You may also be eligible for free assistance at an IRS office or volunteer site. Take your time weighing all the options and find one to best suit your needs.

Consider Direct Deposit - By selecting direct deposit you will receive your refund faster than waiting for a paper check.

for tax forms, publications, tips, answers to frequently asked questions and updates on tax law changes. 

Review Your Return - Don’t Rush!  Be sure to check all Social
Security Numbers and math calculations on your return as these are the most common errors made by taxpayers.
