The Bureau suggest that you solicit two or three bids for the remodeling work you are planning, but do not automatically accept the lowest offer. Make sure all bids are based on the same set of specifications and materials to be used. Ask for local references and inspect the finished projects. Ensure that the contractor is properly licensed. Make sure you understand all financing and contractual terms and never sign a contract with sections left blank. Do not make final payment until the work is completed.

1. Always get estimates in writing.
2. Ask for work reference, then call those references.
3. Read and understand contracts BEFORE you sign.
4. Never sign a contract with blank spaces and keep a copy of the contract.
5. Read and understand what your guarantee covers and does not cover; have verbal agreements in writing.
